How long do good shirts last?
An eternity if you care for them properly. My oldest shirt in my closet is now 12 years old – even though it's worn regularly. The key to the longevity of quality shirts lies in proper care. Treating a shirt with care will extend its lifespan enormously. Here are some simple yet effective tips to maximize the durability of your shirts:
- Wash cold (max. 30 degrees): High temperatures can damage the fabric and fibers, so you should always wash shirts at a low temperature.
- Washing machine with low spin speed: Reduce the spin speed to around 800 rpm. This protects the fabric and prevents unnecessary wear.
- Wash similar colors together: Separate your shirts by color to avoid dye bleeding.
- Special detergent for heavily soiled items: If your shirt is heavily soiled, use a special detergent or have it dry cleaned.
- Hang your shirt to dry: Instead of using the dryer, hang your shirt on a hanger to help retain its shape.
Absolute no-go:
- Drying the shirt in the dryer
- Wash with different colors
- Washing too hot
By following these simple rules, you'll find that your shirts will look like new for years to come. Quality and craftsmanship play a crucial role. My shirts, for example, are made without plastic components and feature tight, fine seams. The robust design, especially the gusset, prevents gaping and contributes to longevity.
The longer you wear a shirt, the more sustainable it is. It's nice to own shirts that last for decades and become part of your personal style and look over time—they tell a story.
Cheers,
